Iris Sutherland

Iris Sutherland was born in Havana, Cuba on August 2, 1925 to Tomas Seton and Lucille Smith. She was raised in Jamaica, West Indies, where she received her primary and secondary education.
At the age of 22 she moved to the United States where she met and married her husband of almost 50 years, the late Roy H. Sutherland. Together they had four children; Peter Sutherland of New Rochelle, NY, David Sutherland of Hopewell Junction, NY, and Elizabeth Payne and Rebecca Jones, both of New Rochelle, NY.
Iris received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the City University of New York, and her Master’s Degree in Education from the College of New Rochelle. She became a College and Career Counselor at New Rochelle High School where she worked for many years until she retired in 1995.
Iris Sutherland as a devoted wife, mother, educator, and community activist. She also loved to travel and vacation with her two dear cousins and long time friend; Pauline Costello, Elaine Morton (deceased) and Grace Edwards, as well as her beloved cousins, and dear friends from her “Florida crew.”
She was a member of the Missionaries on the Move Christian Outreach Church in New Rochelle, NY where her daughter, The Reverend Elizabeth Payne, is the Pastor.
Iris Sutherland is survived by her four children named above, five grandchildren; Donte Payne, Lee Payne, Liam Sutherland, and Leah and Michael Jones. Two sons-in-law, Craig Payne and Eric Jones, two daughter-in-law, Anita Sutherland and Yolanda Snow, one granddaughter-in-law, Sabrina Payne, one great-granddaughter, Avery Payne, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from California to New York and New Jersey.
She was also affectionately known as “Big Mommy” to many, including her beloved Ronny and Lorena Payne.
Iris Sutherland will be loved and missed by all who knew her, and we are all blessed to have loved and known her.
