George R. Kirkman

On Monday, May 27, 2019, George R. Kirkman, loving father, brother, uncle and friend passed away at the age of 85.

George, originally from Larchmont, New York, earned a degree in civil engineering and began his career working for Petrillo Engineering before joining the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. George retired in 1994, but was called upon to return to consult on projects for the PA with Perrini Slattery.

While working and then after his “retirement,” George turned his fine arts painting hobby into a second career producing several significant oil paintings and prints. George’s World Trade Center print, painted prior to the loss of the towers, was distributed to the victims families by the Port Authority after 9-11. It was subsequently accepted into New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Modern and Contemporary Art Department. George’s works were on display in various shows, galleries and public buildings throughout his career.

In 1968, George married his former wife, Elizabeth Swanby (1944-2008), and they subsequently moved to Marlboro, New Jersey where they raised two children: a daughter, Lauren and son, George. George lived in Marlboro for the remainder of his life and was a member of Saint Gabriel’s Church but never forgot his Larchmont home.

George was an avid sports fan and early in life played minor league baseball. Subsequently, he coached basketball, football and baseball on various Larchmont and Marlboro teams.

George was also an avid gardener, preferring natural landscapes which often became the subject of his works. Additionally, he was a friend to nature, creating an environment and feeding system that brought birds to his yard year round. He enjoyed trips to Bar Harbor and Cape Cod and was a fixture in the gym, working out daily until his untimely injury and decline.

George was known for his high level of intelligence, ability to fix anything, quick wit, love of nature, sage advice, working-out, Christmas Eve feasts, sense of humor and most importantly his love of his family and friends. He did a lot of living in the years he was given, never did anything half way and did it his way.

George is survived by his children, his sister, Annette Joyce (New Rochelle), nieces, Joanne, Victoria and Heather Caliendo (East Chester), Susan Shaw (an accomplished painter in her own right, Rhode Island); nephews, Joseph and Joseph Joyce Jr. (Larchmont); son-in-law Scott Anderson; and many, many extended family members, longtime close companion Wendy Sonin and friends.

Visiting will be held at George T. Davis Funeral home 16 Shea Pl., New Rochelle, Thursday from 4-8pm A Funeral Mass is scheduled forFriday10:30 at Blessed Sacrament Church. interment will follow at Greenwood Union, Rye.  In lieu of flowers please send donations in the name of George Kirkman to Morganville First Aid Squad, PO BOX 310, 277 Tennent Road, Morganville, NJ 07751
