Joan Epps

Joan Frances Epps succumbed to COVID-19 at the age of 89 on April 21, 2020 at her current residence, Wartburg Assisted Living, Mount Vernon, NY.
Joan was born in New York City on August 2, 1930 to Margaret and Henry Epps. She now joins her parents and older sister Rosemary Brennan-Eddy. Joan and her family moved to New Rochelle in her early years. She attended Albert Leonard Middle School and New Rochelle High School. Upon graduation from HS, she attended Adelphi University in Garden City, NY on a full academic scholarship, and then Katherine Gibbs for courses in Travel and Conference Planning. These courses led to Joan’s employment at General Foods Corporate headquarters in White Plains, NY, as their Corporate Conference Planner. This position it gave her the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the United States. She retired in 1995 from General Foods after a major reorganization. She moved on to work at Belle Prints in Manhattan, a textile company owned and staffed by women as their Office Manager. The ladies became fast friends outside the office. She also worked part time as Office Assistant at Grace Episcopal Church in White Plains, NY assisting with all their local events.
After full retirement Joan joined the New Rochelle YMCA where she took water aerobic classes twice a week and where she built up a social network. Joan loved to cook and entertain her friends. Whenever there was a gathering, she was sure to bring a scrumptious dish, and share her famous recipes with others. She loved to travel. Whenever the opportunity arose her bags were packed. She was ready to go anywhere in the US and other countries, especially Mexico and the Caribbean. Along the way she made many lifelong friends. Joan loved the sun and being near the water. On a good day you would find her sitting down at Davenport Park in her lounge chair, reading a book or having lunch. She could not wait for the summer months to arrive. She was off on weekends to Fire Island where she shared a beach house with friends for many years. Joan was an avid fan of Downing Abbey series and would called friends to discuss each episode.
Joan lived in New Rochelle, NY for most of her life until she moved to an assisted living facility. Joan is survived by her cousins, Marilyn Mann (Dallas, Ga.), Brenda Terry
(Mount Vernon, NY), Goddaughter, Elizabeth Dayes-Dolan, (Tampa, Fla), Godson, Yshak Martinez, Stamford, (CT.) and her adopted family Dinorah, Ricardo Martinez, their sons, Sahmeb, Abidjan (New Rochelle, NY.) and Ann Pore (Mount Vernon, NY.) and a host of cousins and friends. She will be missed and always remembered and cherished as a true friend.
