John Russell Owen Jr., born May 22, 1948 in Providence, Rhode Island, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 30, 2021. John was the second of three sons of Kathryn and Dwight H. Owen. He graduated from Moses Brown High School in 1966 and attended Harvard and Columbia Universities, earning his MBA in 1972. John grew up spending summers working on his grandfather’s cattle ranch in South Dakota riding his favorite horse, Cactus. He later traveled across Europe on a motorcycle before settling down in New Rochelle with his wife Ellen (“Treacy”) Galway Owen, who he married in 1979. John built a successful career in finance, spending several years at Price Waterhouse before serving as CFO for a number of NY-area companies. He was an avid reader and history buff who enjoyed visiting famous civil war-era battlefield sites and tracing his family’s lineage. While happy to share stories of his own many adventures, John’s greatest pride was his two sons, Dwight and Andrew.
John was a warm, gentle-hearted man with a quick wit and a fondness for terrible puns. He is survived by his wife, his sons and their wives Ashley and Melissa, his brother Rob Owen, and his beloved dog Tynan. He is preceded in death by his brother, Dwight Hall Owen Jr. (“Dee”).
The Owens invite their family and friends to celebrate John’s life and share stories at their home on Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 2-5pm.
