Elinor Rittenberg
Elinor Rittenberg, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, died on October 30, 2022. She was 87 years old.
Elinor was born on March 3, 1935, in the Bronx, to the late Harry and Edith (Weber) Goldstein.
Elinor graduated from Walton High School and SUNY New Paltz, and then earned her Master’s degree at Hunter College while raising her young family. She worked for many years as an elementary school teacher in the New Rochelle public school system, starting out at Stephenson School and eventually settling at Trinity School where she taught 1st and 2nd grade until her retirement at the age of 70. Elinor was physically and mentally active throughout her life. She loved working out and making new friends at the Burke gym, where she was a regular until the pandemic struck. She learned Mahjongg later in life and enjoyed playing with friends (and occasionally her daughter). She loved reading, going out to dinner, the opera, and traveling to new places. But spending time with her children and grandchildren gave her the most joy, as it did for all of them.
Elinor is predeceased by her husband Larry, whom she married on June 30,1957. She is survived by her son Bruce Rittenberg and daughter-in-law Faith, her daughter Suzanne Rittenberg Rubinstein, her son Steven Rittenberg and daughter-in-law Stacey, her four grandchildren: Adam, Sara, Andrew and Abby and her beloved cat Gus.
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday November 2, 2022. Refer to the family for additional information.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the options below or one of your own choosing.
These two organizations were chosen based on our mother’s love of reading and her longevity as a wonderful teacher and mentor to so many students over the years, and her love of animals, especially the cats that she had as pets since she was a child.
